CABANAS DE TAVIRA is situated around 7km east of Tavira, on a tidal estuary within the famous Ria Formosa Natural Reserve. Cabanas derives its name from the huts (cabanas) that were erected during the early 18th century by Tavira tuna fishermen to store their fishing gear. The fishermen eventually began building permanent houses for themselves - and the fishing village of 'Cabanas de Tavira' was born.

Cabanas is now a thriving village, located in the unspoilt Eastern Algarve, offering everything for a relaxing holiday. In addition to the excellent choice of restaurants and cafes, there's a daily market, Post Office, craft shops, supermarkets, laundry, banks, ATM, car hire, bicycle hire, public transport and of course all surrounded by sea and nature. Fishing still plays a major role in the economy of Cabanas and there are around 1,000 permanent residents.
